It's not an off-site backup or an un-used backup, but there are multiple points of failure - if one of the drives bites the dust, the other still has all of the data. It's redundancy, which is the equivalent thing in my use. While you may not consider RAID 1 a valid backup, the rest of the world does. So you wanted to build a RAID out of a drive that already had data on it? Yeah, bad idea. I originally had a single drive, and my intention was to have a mirrored drive, so the data would be in two places. OK, I don't think you even read my original post. I put the drives back into the system and there's nothing wrong with them (after formatting), but putting them into the BlacX again corrupts them after I start using them. I'm beyond furious right now that literally the method that I was using to back up my data has now consumed it, entirely. There's no point in RMAing this thing, since they can't do anything about the 2TB of data that is now lost (pictures, music, comics, etc.). I re-formatted and started copying some stuff to them again, and a few hours later both were corrupted.again.

I'm running Windows 10 and these drives are a few years old, but within an hour of starting to copy, both were completely out of commission (it ruined the bootloaders). Within an hour, both drives were corrupted. I bought this dock so I could take a few out and plug them into this while I wait for a PCI card for additional SATA ports. As such, I wanted to change some of the setup to a raid format for a few of them, for redundancy. I have a home server with 6 drives in it, 2 of which I just added.
